Labour Day weekend is approaching and we're all rolling up our sleeping bags & gear and getting ready to head over to Spider's for another awesome weekend. But don't forget to bring lots of sweaters cuz in case you haven't noticed lately, summer is no longer summer - it's fall - then you blink & it's winter - for a long long fucking time! Another reason why one should not miss this party! It's one of the few last "warm" party daze before the snowpants have to be dusted off & worked in. Just a quick update: The date for the All Ages Benefit Show in Toronto for Spiderland Acres has been changed to CANADUH DAY - TUESDAY JULY 1ST 2003. It's a holiday for most of us so hopefully you haven't already made plans - until now! Anyway, as mentioned previously it will still be held at Club Rockit (120 Church St @ Richmond St E, in Toronto), the cost is still only a measly $5 with 19+I.D. / $7 without, and there are 11 frickin bands on the bill. The show goes from 5:00pm until approx 1:00am. The play-times of all the bands will be listed and sent out to the Punkfest Email list as soon as the bands have confirmed their scheduled spots. See y'all there, hee~haw~! the web geek. June 6, 2003SOS! Greetings to all, both friend and foe: In light of recent events I've become flooded with a million things to do. That's the lame excuse I’m sticking with for waiting so many days to update this site. As some of us are aware by now Spider's Barn is no more. Only a few days following this year's Spring Bash 2003 at Spiderland Acres (which by the way was awesome as always) the Barn was torched by some very mean and cowardly individuals. Yes, the very barn in which we partied our brains out just a few weeks ago. The entire barn, along with its contents has been burned right down to the ground. This is the second attack on Spiderland Acres, the first attack was on Spider's house, and it is a severe loss for Spider and friends and tenants who had stored their belongings within. Over the years it has become apparent that there are haters lurking around sniffing for trouble where there isn't any, and for their own twisted and tainted reasons are adamantly opposed to Punkfest and punks in general dwelling within or visiting their town and are determined to have Punkfest shut down. In short, they wish to censor their town and keep it punk-free, or punk-less, or whatever the politically correct term may be. I guess it's to be expected of such narrow-minded individuals. After all, closed minds are more difficult to open. I live in a city with several million people who are spoiled to shit, selfish, snobby and some even dumb enough to support a circus side-show for a mayor. If you haven't already guessed, I live in Toronto. But living in Toronto means I also get to see people with all different hair colors & styles, opinions, beliefs more than twice a year, and oddly enough, we for the most part seem to tolerate, accept, and even learn to appreciate each other and the few precious commodities such as personality, culture, sub-cultures and individuality than a small town of just over 1400 people who all look the same, think the same, behave the same, perm their hair the same, and watch the same 4 trashy shows on TV at the same time same channel day in and day out. Grrr... I'm fuming, which means I can go on forever. I'll leave it at that for now. In any case, as a result of crazy accusations, affidavits, court orders and injunctions, bands are unable to play outdoors as they did for the first bunch of years. Anti-Punkfest bi-laws were passed and imposed because some people do not particularly like the way the attendees look or speak in public even though they themselves all run back to their own little closets and speak the same garbage and stink just the same as the rest of us underneath all that cologne and those perfumed pit-sticks that they wear. The original Spiderland Acres Ampitheatre had to be torn down by court order a couple of years ago so the Barn had since become the new home to many of the most recent shows. The last thing I want is for this website to be portrayed as negative because Punkfest and Spiderland represents to me the positive message of freedom & the right to be whoever you are comfortable being, to laugh, play music and chill the fuck out! However, every time I think of people imposing any form of oppression or unnecessary censorship upon us it baffles me and I have to stop and question what drives them so. What makes it so crucial for one person to ruin the life of another? Is it because they have such a negative view on life and they are spiteful of those who are capable of having a good time? Or is it because they have been so conditioned by their elders to make certain that every manner is minded, every ‘i’ dotted and every ‘t’ crossed? Are there really people out there with truly virgin ears who think that Punk and Rock are curse-words!?? Hmm... On a more positive note, I really ought to mention that MANY awesome shows were held in the Barn in the last several years and we will not forget that very awesome fact. Many of us have attended Punkfests, Spring Bashes and Labour Day Bashes at Spiderland Acres and some of us have watched Spider jumping hurdles, performing backflips and duking it out in court with very little support, in order to keep Punk Rock alive and kicking shit in Marmora and surrounding area. I’m not speaking metaphorically either - I mean, Spider can really do those things! No, I’m joking - you’ll have to ask him yourself if he really can do backflips. But in all seriousness, Spider really needs all the help he can get in order to rebuild the Barn so that he can continue to hold more awesome parties. Please help in any way you can to save Spiderland Acres and Punkfest from the hands of bored and destructive cowards who can’t even stand up and own up to their dirty deeds! Bad Karma for these people, I'm sure. Anybody know a good voodoo curse? Please donate what you can in the form of cinder blocks and other building materials, and if you are able, your time would be valued greatly. Every bit of help is highly appreciated. If you are a band or promoter of punk shows please consider holding a local benefit show in your city/town/village/commune to support the rebuilding of the barn so that we may see all those awesome shows happening again soon! There will be a super cheap All Ages, All Day local benefit show for Spiderland in Toronto, ON on CANADA DAY - Tuesday July 1st 2003 (*please note the new date*) with 11 Toronto bands: Bunchofuckingoofs, Son Of Bronto, Fucknuckles, Lost, Shitloads of Fuck All, PsychoActivist, the Murder Squad t.o., the Nonos, Out Of Hand, Crotch Wrott and the Whoremoans (whose name I can’t ever seem to spell right). Cost is only $5 with 19+ I.D. and only $7 without 19+ I.D.. Doors open at 5:00pm and bands will play until approx 1:00am. If you’re in the area please come and check out the huge line-up of some of your favourite Toronto Punk Bands all under one roof all in one night!
